How to Make Drop Roll Curtains

Drop roll curtains make attractive and functional window coverings. They are suitable for smaller windows and have an unfussy, tailored appearance. Because some of the lining fabric will be seen when you roll up the curtain, choose a complementary color fabric. Making the curtains involves careful measuring and cutting, some easy sewing and basic hardware installation.

Instructions

  1. Making Drop Roll Curtains

    • 1

Cut the fabric, lining and fusible web. Cut the fabric and fusible web 1 inch narrower than the cornice width and 12 inches longer than the distance from the cornice to the window sill. Cut the lining 2 inches wider and 3-1/2 inches longer than the other pieces.

    • 2

Place the lining right side down on a flat surface. Place the fusible web and then the shade fabric on top of the lining, centering them exactly. Press with a hot iron to fuse the layers together. (Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the fusible web.)

    • 3

Fold the lining over by 1/2 inch then another 1/2 inch along the two sides toward the front, and sew these side hems. Along the top men, fold the lining over by 1/2 inch then 1-1/2 inches and stitch to form the rod pocket. Fold the bottom hem over by a 1/2 inch then 1 inch and sew to make a pocket for the dowel.

    • 4

Insert the curtain rod in the top pocket and the dowel in the bottom pocket. Hand slip-stitch the two ends of the bottom seam allowance to hold the dowel in place.

    • 5

Screw the curtain rod sockets to the inner sides of the cornice. Mark the two places on the inside of the top of the cornice where you want the pull cords to hang. Insert one screw eye toward the front and one toward the back of the cornice at these two positions.

    • 6

Cut two lengths of shade cord about four times the depth of the window. Tie one cord to one of the back screw eyes, then thread it through the matching front screw eye. Tie the second cord to the back screw eye on the other side, through the matching screw eye, then across the width of the cornice and through the front screw eye on the first side. This is the pull side.

    • 7

Mount the cornice at the top of the window, place the curtain pole into the sockets and loop the two cords underneath the rolled-up shade to hold it in place. Adjust the cords, cut and tie them at an appropriate length, then attach a cleat at the side of the window to hold the cords.
