How do you help your son get over breaking up with his girlfriend?

1. Be supportive.

Let your son know that you're there for him, and that you're going to support him through this tough time. Listen to him talk about his feelings; don't judge him or try to fix things for him. Just let him know you're there to listen.

2. Encourage him to talk about his feelings.

Expressing emotions can help your son process the breakup. Encourage him to talk to you, a therapist or a trusted friend about what he's going through.

3. Let him grieve.

A breakup is a loss, and it's important for your son to grieve the end of his relationship. Don't try to rush him or tell him he should "get over it." Just let him feel sad or angry for as long as he needs to.

4. Help him to take care of himself.

Make sure your son is eating, sleeping and getting exercise. Encourage him to do things he enjoys that make him feel good about himself.

5. Remind him of his self-worth.

After a breakup, your son may start to doubt himself and his worth. Remind him of all the things that he's good at and all the things you love about him.

6. Suggest professional help.

If the breakup is really tough on your son, suggest that he seek professional help from a therapist. A therapist can help your son work through his emotions and develop coping mechanisms.

7. Reassure him that time heals.

Remind him that time heals, and that he will eventually feel better.
