How to De-Shank Pointe Shoes

Deshanking pointe shoes is a way to turn a pointe shoe into a semi-pointe or soft block ballet shoe. Once you reach an advanced level, a semi-pointe shoe is recommended over soft ballet slippers, and using a true pointe shoe can make it difficult to navigate your feet. You can deshank your own pointe shoes by yourself with a little bit of work.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the pair of pointe shoes you want to deshank and remove the leather. This can be done by simply pulling on the leather part on the sole of your shoe. Save them for later because you will need them again.

    • 2

Remove the nails that hold the shank to the bottom of the shoe. To do this you can either wedge a flathead screwdriver or a butter knife between the toe and loosen the shank. Or you can use needle-nose pliers and pry the nails out.

    • 3

Soften the toe platform by stamping on it or banging it against a hard surface. This will help loosen the toe box and help create a better semi pointe shoe.

    • 4

Place the leather sole back into the shoe. The sole should be able to stick back down however if it slides around while your foot is in it, use some glue on the bottom of the sole.
