What is Femme assise?

Femme assise (Seated Woman) is a bronze sculpture by Henri Matisse. It was created in 1922 and is considered one of Matisse's most important works. The sculpture is a depiction of a woman seated on a chair. The woman is shown with her head turned to the side and her eyes closed. She is wearing a simple dress and her hair is pulled back in a bun. Femme assise was exhibited in the Salon d'Automne in 1922 and was met with critical acclaim. It was praised for its simplicity and beauty and was considered a breakthrough in Matisse's work. The sculpture was cast in bronze in an edition of six and is currently housed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
