Explain your class rules at the beginning of class. When kids disobey or do something inappropriate, remind them of the rules. Create consequences such as a three-minute time out. Demand respect by enforcing your rules; this teaches discipline.
Use engaging music and a variety of music, both classical tunes as well as more popular songs like Disney Princess melodies that will interest young children. Use the children's first names as you speak to them and direct them from one place to another through movements and corrections.
Go through the basic ballet arm and leg positions. Always use the names of these positions. Repeat them several times and move from one position to another in a fluid motion so the children learn to connect the movements.
Create a circle for "circle time." Do plies, tendus and other basic ballet steps in the circle. Go around the circle and do quizzes. Ask each child to demonstrate a skill (which you specify). This tests their knowledge of the skill. Encourage the other children to clap politely when a student performs the skill correctly.
Put together simple combinations. Demonstrate several times and go through the steps slowly. Repetition is key. Perform the combination with the children, and then let them do it by themselves. Correct the students as appropriate. Repeat the combination again to see the improvements.
