What Is the Proper Dance Attire for a Beginner's Ballet Class?

The required attire for a dance class, even for a beginner, can vary from studio to studio. Some establishments have strict dress codes from the brand of shoe to the type of clothing that is allowed to the color of the clothing while others may only give you loose guidelines. Ballet classes, even introductory classes, are known for being stricter and more rigid in dress codes than others, due to the focus on form necessary in ballet. Regardless of your studio rules, however, following a few basic rules can enable you to dress in a way that is safe, appropriate and allows the teachers to easily evaluate your form and movement.
  1. Main Pieces

    • A leotard is the most common and widely used attire piece in a dance lesson ensemble. Leotards are available for all ages and come in a variety of colors and styles. The classic version is typically similar looking to a bathing suit, legless and sleeveless; however, some studios may allow you to wear leotards that have shorts or long sleeves. Some studios may also allow you to wear a sports bra top in lieu of a leotard, but for a beginner class, sticking with the traditional leotard is best until you learn the code of the studio. Light, sheer skirts are often worn with leotards or tutu style skirts for an especially rigid studio.

    Legs

    • Legs are typically covered by tights for a ballet class, even a beginner ballet class. The tights are worn under the leotard and skirt. Some studios may allow you to wear shorts or even fitted pants or leggings; however, if you are just starting out, it is best to stick with the norm, which is tights. The tights are typically pink, white, tan or black. Do not stray far from these colors until you learn more about the dress code and color requirements of the studio.

    Feet

    • Ballet slippers are nearly always worn for a beginner ballet class. As the student progresses, she may develop into lyrical shoes or point shoes, but ballet slippers, typically in pink, are the normal choice for a beginner's class. The type and style of the ballet slippers should be relayed to you by the class instructor. He may even have an exact brand and color in mind for the classes. However, a classic ballet slipper typical for a beginner class usually has a draw string on the toe that tightens the sides of the slipper. The tie should be tied into a tight bow. The slippers typically also come with an elastic strap that is sewn to the top, sides of the shoe so the band spans the top of your foot and helps hold the shoe in place.

    Hair

    • Hair always needs to be pulled back off the face and neck for a ballet class. Buns are the proper and classic style for hair for a traditional ballet class; however, your studio may not require this. The hair must at least be pulled into a tight and high ponytail, a braid or even pigtails so the instructor can see the dancer's neck and shoulders. Excessive ribbons and clips should not be worn in the hair, as they can fall out and cause a dancer to slip or become distracted.
