Practicing surrender is one of Ekhart Tolle's favorite techniques to achieving inner peace and enlightenment. By saying yes and accepting situations and circumstances as they are, rather than as you would have them be, you allow yourself to be a neutral observer. Being a neutral observer does not mean that you will not have negative thoughts or judgments about your situation, but that when you do, you drop those thoughts and associated emotions quickly.
"The Power of Now" stresses connecting with your inner energy several times a day. Connecting and feeling your inner energy can be accomplished in as little as 10 seconds and consists of simply being in the moment and connecting with your feelings without judgment or action. Tolle recommends doing this 10 to 20 times a day, with longer periods spent feeling when you awake in the morning and before you go to sleep at night. Surrender is incorporated into this technique as Tolle advises to not take your feelings too seriously or create stories in your mind.
Another technique recommended in "The Power of Now" is to pay attention to each event occurring in your life regardless of how mundane or trivial and without concerning yourself about the end result. Whether you are opening a door, putting on a shirt or completing one portion of a project at work, activities should be broken out into smaller components, with your complete attention focused on the task at hand and without regard for the next step you must take. As you cultivate the practice of paying attention, you will cultivate the ability to stay in the moment.
Time outs provide an opportunity to disconnect from your surrounding circumstances and to connect with yourself. Planning a morning or evening where you refrain from watching television, surfing the Internet or reading is one way to practice allowing yourself to be in the moment.
