# Century Quilt by Marilyn Nelson

Patchwork quilt, my history

A century of time in me.

Handsewn by grandmas,

Stitched with tears and prayers.

A record of their hopes and fears,

Their joys and despairs.

They pieced together scraps

Of dresses and overalls,

Shirts and skirts,

Sheets and pillowcases.

Each patch tells a story,

A bit of their lives.

A birth, a marriage,

A death, a new beginning.

This quilt is a legacy,

A gift from the past.

It keeps me warm on cold winter nights,

And reminds me of the women who came before me.

The Wedding Dress:

A scrap of white satin,

From my grandmother's wedding dress.

She was a beautiful bride,

With long, flowing hair.

She married my grandfather in 1900,

In a small church in the country.

They had a long and happy life together,

And raised six children.

The Baby Blanket:

A soft piece of flannel,

From my baby blanket.

I was a colicky baby,

But this blanket always soothed me.

My mother made it for me,

When I was born in 1930.

She put a lot of love into it,

And I still cherish it today.

The Farm Shirt:

A faded blue cotton shirt,

From my grandfather's farm shirt.

He was a hard worker,

And this shirt shows the wear and tear of his life.

He worked long hours in the fields,

To provide for his family.

He was a good man,

And I'm proud to be his grandson.

The School Dress:

A simple cotton dress,

From my mother's school dress.

She was a bright student,

And she always loved to learn.

She went to school in a one-room schoolhouse,

And she had to walk several miles to get there.

But she never complained,

And she always made the most of her education.

The War Uniform:

A worn and tattered army uniform,

From my father's war uniform.

He fought in World War II,

And he was wounded in action.

He was a brave man,

And he sacrificed a lot for his country.

I'm so proud of him,

And I'm glad he came home safely.

The Century Quilt:

These are just a few of the patches

That make up my century quilt.

Each patch tells a story,

A bit of our family history.

This quilt is a treasure,

A legacy that will be passed down

From generation to generation.

It is a reminder of the women and men

Who came before us,

And the sacrifices they made.

It is a reminder of our history,

And the values that are important to us.

It is a reminder of our family,

And the love that binds us together.

This quilt is my history,

A century of time in me.
