What makes a good poet?

Imagination: The ability to perceive the world in a fresh and original way, to see connections that others might overlook.

Inspiration: That internal spark that drives poets to create. Inspiration can come from anything from a personal experience to a social issue to a beautiful object in nature.

Language: The ability to use language effectively and persuasively. This includes a strong understanding of grammar and syntax as well as a wide vocabulary.

Voice: A distinctive individual style that sets the poet apart from others.

Musicality: An understanding of the music of language, and the ability to use rhythm, rhyme, and other sonic devices to enhance the poems impact.

Knowledge of Poetry: A familiarity with the history and traditions of poetry, and a willingness to experiment and innovate with form.

Empathy: The ability to understand and express the emotions of others, and to connect with readers on a personal level.

Authenticity: A commitment to writing with honesty and integrity. The reader should be able to sense that the poet is expressing their genuine feelings and thoughts.
