Determine the subject. Generally, there are a number of things that should be considered before starting on a poem. But first and foremost comes the subject. The subject is the core of the poem; the thing you are trying to say. This could be a description, a recent experience, a foggy memory. Make sure you know exactly the point you are trying to get across and make it clear to your reader.
Let out your emotions. The feeling is what makes the poem, what brings forth your subject. The feeling should not be so much a description, but rather how your subject and other elements make you feel. Let your reader know what you are feeling, your emotions, your thoughts. Then start adding words to this feeling. The only way to make your poem meaningful is through emotionally charged words.
Decide on the style of your poem. The style of the poem is closely connected to the writing mood, the way the poem is written. Feelings can be expressed in many different ways, sarcastically, seriously or humorously. So determine your mood, style and tone. Choose between a classical or modern type of poem. Select a tone, as your poem could be formal or humorous. Decide on its rhythm. Choose between a free and rhymed-verse style of writing. Always go for the style that best describes your emotions and represents you as a writer.
