In Romeo and Juliet, the potion that Friar Laurence gave to Juliet was made from a mixture of flowers, herbs, and plants, including mandrake root, poppy, and nightshade. The potion had a powerful sedative effect, causing Juliet to appear to be dead when in fact she was simply in a deep sleep.
