How to Write a Classifying Paragraph

Writing classification paragraphs is essential for applying the basic components of English grammar and comprehension. Classification demands the writer to identify a topic for the paragraph and to sub-divide the topic into three minor categories. Any topic is up for grabs when working on classification skills. Put together a topic on music, for example, with sub-divisions for pop, country and classical.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the topic of your paragraph in the first sentence. Mention your sub-categories in the topic sentence. For example: "My interest in music extends far and wide, from pop to country and classical melodies."

    • 2

Write the body of the paragraph. Divide the body into three to six sentences using sub-categories to expand on your topic. Explain the relevance of each sub-category, and back it up with an example in one or two of those sentences. Maintain the sub-category order as outlined in the topic sentence. Begin with pop music, for example: "Pop music is easy to listen to with its soft and energetic beats. I listen to pop music with friends, at night and on the weekend." Continue in this manner for country and classical music.

    • 3

Conclude the paragraph. Write a sentence that sums up the topic and sub-categories. For example: "No matter where I am, or what time of day, music is never out of reach."
