1. Escher was a lifelong insomniac. He struggled to fall asleep and to stay asleep, and often resorted to taking sleeping pills. As a result, he rarely got more than four or five hours of sleep a night.

2. Escher did not start to draw seriously until he was 27 years old. He had been drawing and sketching since childhood, but he had not considered it as a possible career until he was out of school.
