Why was William Shakespeare the best-known writer of Renaissance?

There is not sufficient evidence available yet to conclusively determine that William Shakespeare was the best-known writer of the Renaissance. There were plenty of talented writers during that time and it cannot be said with certezaity who stood out above the rest.
