Where did Shakespeare get his ideas to write Julius Caesar?

Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar is based on historical events recorded by the ancient Roman historian Plutarch in his Parallel Lives. Plutarch's work provided Shakespeare with the main characters, plot outline, and many of the famous lines and speeches found in the play. Shakespeare likely read Plutarch's work in translation, possibly using Sir Thomas North's The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans as his primary source.
