English is a journal of literary criticism, published by Oxford Journals on behalf of The English Association. The journal is dedicated to reviews of contemporary works in English literature, as well as critical essays on more established works. With the review section, the journal seeks to place contemporary works in the context of recent events in their field, and examine them as such. This gives each volume of the journal a fresh take on contemporary issues affecting contemporary writers. English also sets itself apart from other literature journals with its lively and engaging style, as well as its policy of publishing original poetic works.
The Oxford Literary Review has been published continuously since the 1970s, making it the longest-running literary journal in the U.K. The Review focuses on in-depth critical theory of literature and prides itself on publishing exclusive works from some of the best-regarded literary critics in the discipline. In the past, the journal has published essays from Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault. The Oxford Literary Review focuses on works and criticism of deconstruction.
Granta -- originally The Granta -- began as a periodical for the literary output of students at Cambridge University in England. Named after the river that runs through town, the magazine soon began to publish works from A. A. Milne, Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. The magazine's fortunes were dwindling by the 1970s, but in 1979, it was rescued by a group of post-graduate students. Since then, Granta's contributor list has read like a who's who of contemporary English literature. Granta has featured essays by Saul Bellow, Salman Rushdie, Jeanette Winterson and Bill Bryson.
Aesthetica is a journal that casts its eye wider than traditional literary journals, covering other cultural areas such as theater, film and art. The magazine's literary section includes contributions from Leo Benedictus, a novelist and journalist, and African-American author Dinaw Mengestu. The literary portion of the journal includes critical essays as well as some original work.
