How to Write a Summary of a Long Text

A summary is a short explanation of a book, essay or text that mentions the author, the title of the writing and a general thesis of the piece. It contains the general idea of the story and is meant to draw in readers by appealing to their interest. You can easily write a summary for a text in a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down an initial summation of the text just for practice. Use a pen and notebook paper to jot it down, or use your computer with a word processing program, where you can easily edit and delete anything. You will be able to re-read and revise it.

    • 2

Compose an introductory sentence of the text. State the name of the text and the author's name. If the author has written other pieces in the past, briefly make mention of that and include a title.

    • 3

Write a paragraph about the main idea, or thesis of the text. Keep the statement brief and to the point. Be sure to write in your own wording and avoid copying phrases or sentences found in the text itself.

    • 4

Mention a few major events that occur in the text. Do not give away specific details or resolution of the events, but make mention of them. Your aim is to draw the reader's attention and interest so that they want to read the full text or book.

    • 5

Use quotation marks when mentioning a good quote from a character in the text. Include any quote that contains a phrase that may capture a reader's interest.
