What inspired John Boyne to write?

John Boyne was inspired to write after reading a quote by Oscar Wilde: "There is nothing so dangerous as being too modern. One is apt to grow old-fashioned quite suddenly." This quote made him realize that the way people perceive modernity is constantly changing, and that what is considered modern today may be seen as old-fashioned tomorrow. This idea inspired him to write stories about people who are trying to keep up with the times and the challenges that come with living in a rapidly changing world.
