Visit sites such as "coloringcastle.com," "creativity-portal.com" or "my1stop.com" to download a free bookmark template or create your own by opening a new document with the proper dimensions. Note that most bookmarks measure approximately 6 1/2 inches by 2 3/4 inches.
Find a high-resolution photograph either from a digital camera or by scanning an old photo into your computer with a scanner if you have one. Make sure the graphic settings are set at 300 DPI (dots per inch) for best results. The higher the DPI, the better the finished bookmark will look once it's printed out.
Place the photo along with a background image or color that compliments it on the front of your bookmark template. Play around with color and placement until you're happy with the overall look.
Add some content to the back of your bookmark by either writing a poem, picking a passage from the Bible or including an obituary. The content depends on when you plan to hand out the bookmarks and for what purpose. For example, if a loved one passes away due as a result of drunk driving, you may want to use the bookmarks as a way of increasing driving under the influence awareness in your area.
Save your file on a disk to reuse later or take to a local print shop. Take your disc into a shop such as Kinkos, FedEx or Staples to have the bookmarks printed for you.
Edit your design at any time by loading your file into a graphic editor and making the necessary changes.
