Blogs such as Freelancewritinggigs, Problogger, Bloggingpro and Freelancewriting are just a handful of online resources available to writers today. Each of these sites lists jobs writers can find around the net and a few of them list their own jobs as well. To see the latest jobs, check their listings under "Jobs" or read their blogs. In most cases, these blogs post new jobs once every other week. Just remember to check the date on a job listing before looking into it and only take on what you think you can handle.
Online communities such as Absolutewrite, Freelanceswitch and Wahm are wonderful resources for writers. Not only do these sites list sites for freelance writers, they also have a forum to build community. Writers can hop into these forums for advice, to share their experiences or warn other writers about a nonpaying client. When choosing a job listing from these communities, do a search of the forums first. You may find some additional information on the job you're looking to pick up. Even if you don't take on any of the jobs listed on these sites, they're a great resource to have.
Places online such as Craiglist, Journalismjobs and Sunoasis not only include classified listings for freelance writers to look through, you can also submit your own ads. So, if you have a particular job you're looking to take on, you can list an ad that says "Writer looking for work" and list the details. If you like to blog, mention that in your ad. Just keep in mind that on some of these sites the expected pay may be minimal.
Don't forget to check your local newspaper. While finding jobs online is easier due to sites that are built for freelance writers, checking your local newspaper every now and again may offer a great opportunity. If you have the funds, try placing an ad in the paper. You can also visit local businesses and ask them if they need a writer for their website or blog or if they'd like you to help them with social networking. Online marketing is still a new concept to some businesses. They may not have the time or the funds to hire a professional. These instances when a business wants to go online, but cannot afford a professional, can be a great way for any freelance writer to expand their portfolio.
