Craft Ideas for a Literature Circle

Forming literature circles in class allows a small group of students to come together and discuss a piece of literature in depth. Crafts and artistic pieces created by students can complement these discussions and can further their understanding of the book. Crafts also allow students to be creative while drawing, painting or compiling images for collages.
  1. Story Quilt

    • Have each person in your literary circle choose an event, theme, character or memorable scene from the book to base the story quilt on. Draw your blueprint of the quilt on scratch paper beforehand. Cut several 12-inch squares out of either cloth or construction paper. Each square in your literature circle will later be attached in a larger story quilt. Draw a border around the story quilt that also adheres to the theme. Your literature circle can come up with ideas for borders and draw the same one for all the quilts.

    Collage

    • Create a collage that supports the themes or important ideas in the book you're reading. Use a large piece of construction paper or other sturdy paper type as a base. Look through a selection of magazines and cut out the images that seem relevant to your book. On the back of the collage or on a separate piece of paper, write out your reasoning behind choosing each image in the collage to support your ideas.

    CD Cover and Mix

    • Creating a CD cover for your literature circle can be designed in much the same way as the collage, as long as the design relates to the novel in some way. You can also draw or write whatever your choose for your CD album cover. You can also mix a CD with songs that contain themes and messages pertinent to the ones in the novel. Make sure to write the playlist on the back cover of the CD case.

    Painting

    • Take one scene from the novel being read in the literature circle and create a painting. If you choose, you can make it abstract, or based on your own perceptions of what happened in the scene or the characters. You can use watercolors or acrylic on canvas, making sure to cover your workspace with recycled paper to avoid spills or stains.
