Dresser was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and began his musical career as a church organist. He later moved to New York City, where he studied with Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns. In 1853, he published his first book, "The Organ and Its Practical Application."
In 1860, Dresser moved to Germany, where he studied with Franz Liszt. He returned to the United States in 1863 and began teaching at the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1872, he published his second book, "The Art of Music."
Dresser's music is often described as being "Romantic." He wrote a variety of works, including symphonies, operas, and chamber music. His most famous work is the opera "The Daughter of the Sun," which was premiered in Boston in 1880.
Dresser was also a philosopher and music theorist. He published several books on music theory, including "The Philosophy of Music" (1875) and "The Evolution of Music" (1887).
In 1890, Dresser moved to Boston, where he founded the Boston Conservatory of Music. He died in Boston in 1897.
Dresser's music and writings have had a significant influence on American music. He is considered one of the most important figures in the development of American musical thought.
