How to Draft an Autobiography

Drafting an autobiography takes a lot of planning. After all, you are attempting to write the story of your life. Adopting the following strategy should make the process easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide your life experiences into sections. You could label them Childhood, Adolescence, Adulthood, Middle Age or Old Age, depending on how long you have lived. Dividing your life by decade also works well. The diagram slices your life into smaller chunks that are easier to work with.

    • 2

List as many memories for each section as you can. Some people list their top 10 moments both good and bad. Others have listed up to 100 memories in each section. Write a number you are comfortable with, but be thorough. From flying a kite and learning to drive to becoming a parent, find the stories that define you.

    • 3

Cull from these memories the things that make great stories, such as interesting characters, impressive or scary settings, and any conflicts or problems you faced. These stories should run from sad to funny.

    • 4

Pick a defining moment for each section of your life. For instance, maybe your parents divorced when you were a teenager, and that motivated you to build a strong marriage as an adult.

    • 5

Try to find a theme that runs throughout your life. Have you led a full life or are you filled with regret? Allow the audience in, and then explain that because you have evaluated yourself during the writing process, you have now changed in some way.
