What Is an Adventure Story?

Adventure stories make up some of the most enticing novels to read. The plots of adventure stories take many twists and turns and are often in dangerous and exotic locations. They pose fascinating characters who are usually pursuing a fast-paced and dramatic effort to survive.
  1. Function

    • Adventure stories are a form of fictional literary entertainment. They are designed to give readers an inside view of someone’s misfortune or a hero’s dilemma. They most often expose a great deal of suspense and drama.

    Characteristics

    • The main character of an adventure story is usually a heroic man. He is most significantly drawn to accomplishing his goals, and strays from devoting too much time to efforts involved with personal relationships. These adventure story characters are typically strong and skilled, and are able to keep readers engaged through their fast-paced methods and ability to overcome any obstacles that get in their way.

    Appeal

    • Most people would not want to witness an actual bank robbery or ride as a passenger on a descending aircraft, yet reading about these adventures isn’t as terrifying. The attraction to adventure stories lies within the yearning to view these dramatic experiences within the safety of your own mind, not in the midst of actual events. Examples of Adventure stories include the "Harry Potter" series and "The Da Vinci Code."
