How to Learn Bengali

Bengali, or the Bangla language, is one of the most-spoken languages in the world. It has around 230 million speakers internationally. Becoming one of them takes some work and cannot be accomplished overnight. The ancient language is an Indo-Aryan language and is native to the eastern part of India. The Indian diaspora brings the language to cities on all continents. Eager students can find a variety of ways to begin study.

      Set a goal for yourself. Plan how long you wish to study to be able to speak Bengali. Choose hours in the day or in the week that you will devote to the study of the language. Study at the planned times. Make a calendar on which to track your study hours.

      Look at local educational listings to see if there is a Bengali language class offered near you. Read listings in the services-offered section of publications to find a tutor. If none are found, place an advertisement for a tutor. Begin to study with the tutor and/or the classes if available.

      Go on line and run a search engine inquiry for online Bengali instruction. Enroll in the distance learning course. Look for websites that offer Bengali phrases and their pronunciation in audio clips. Many such websites are offered free of charge. Look for interactive language games at such sites.

      Watch some of the many Bengali-language movies or, if available, television. Try to pick up words or phrases. Watch the same movie many times or television programs regularly. Pay close attention to advertisements if you are watching Bengali television because they are short and repetitious.

      Purchase materials that instruct in writing the language as well as an English/Bengali dictionary. Study the alphabet and practice writing the letters. Complete lessons in a workbook that give you structured lessons in writing and grammar. Keep a written journal of notes.

      Check local cultural listings to find Bengali community activities. Many U.S. cities have immigrant communities from Bengali-speaking areas. Attend public events in the community such as theater, festivals or dances to meet native speakers or other students of the language. Practice conversation.

      Complete each level of guided instruction, use the other tools suggested and continue your study until you are proficient in Bengali. Expand your circle of Bengali-speaking acquaintances. Travel to India to practice your new language.
