Stories for Children That Are Age Five

There are several well known stories that all young children should read. These childhood stories often involve whimsical characters, faraway lands and a triumph of good over evil. Safe for children aged 5 and older, these stores have been passed down from generation to generation. Although the stories are often entertaining, a good moral lesson can be learned from reading them.
  1. One Eye, Two Eyes, Three Eyes

    • "One Eye, Two Eyes, Three Eyes" is a fairy tale suitable for five year old children and older. The story introduces us two a girl named "Little Two Eyes," who has a set of eyes like ordinary individuals. Her older sister has one eye on her forehead, while her youngest sister has three eyes scattered throughout. Little Two Eyes was ridiculed often by her family for having two eyes, and barely receives food. Throughout the story she is treated badly until a mysterious woman and a magical goat befriend her and change her life.

    Hansel and Gretel

    • "Hansel and Gretel" is a fairy tale published in the 19th century by the Brothers Grimm. In the story, Hansel and Gretel are two poor children whose father is a woodcutter. Once famine befalls the land, their parents concoct a plan to abandon the children, to ensure that the parents have enough food to eat. Once abandoned, the children wander in the woods until they find a house built out of gingerbread and cakes. The homeowner turns out to be a wicked witch who has malicious intent for the children. Hansel and Gretel must try their best to escape from the witch's house.

    The Story of the Three Bears

    • "The Story of the Three Bears" is a well known story authored by the British poet Robert Southey. The story features three good natured bears that live together in the woods. One day, the bears make hot porridge. While waiting in the woods for the porridge to cool, a lady enters the house. Once inside the lady causes damage to the bear's belongings and porridge. After a while, the bears return to find the lady sleeping on one of the bear's beds.

    The Light Princess

    • "The Light Princess" is a fairy tale written by George MacDonald and published in 1864. The story involves a king and queen who have a daughter. Everyone except the spiteful and mean Princess Makemnoit (the king's sister) is invited to the christening. Princess Makemnoit crashes the christening anyhow, and places a curse on the new princess. The new princess loses her gravitational pull to the earth and the slightest imbalance sets her off flying into the air. The story then tells of the plight of the royal family and a prince from another country to cure her of her curse.
