How to Do Self-Publishing

Waiting for a publisher to accept your manuscript can be nerve-wracking and potentially heartbreaking. With ebooks and on-demand printing presses on the rise, self-publishing is becoming more and more accessible to aspiring writers. While self-publishing is not an end-all solution to getting your book read, it does put the power back in your hands when it comes to distributing and marketing your writing. If you're dedicated to promotion and feel your book has strong appeal and would thrive without the support of a major publishing house, self-publish might be the right option for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Edit your book thoroughly, checking for both grammatical and stylistic problems. If you have the money to hire a professional editor, do so. If not, ensure that another person reads the manuscript before you proceed. When you self-publish, you are responsible for the professionalism of your book. One careless mistake can call your credibility as an author into question.

    • 2

Use your favorite desktop publishing software to format your book for print or ebook distribution. Choose a simple, clear font. If you will be using a printer or specific e-book platform, make sure your margins and page sizes fit the printer or platform's specifications.

    • 3

Convert your formatted book to a portable document format (PDF) file, which is the most versatile format accepted by most printers and ebook platforms. Some ebook platforms require you to convert to the ePub format or a propriety format from that PDF file.

    • 4

E-mail or upload your PDF or converted book to the printer or ebook platform of your choice. The printer will contact you if any changes are needed to work with its press.

    • 5

Distribute your book to your desired outlets. For print books, set up a website to sell the books or try to get local booksellers to sell your book in their stores. Ebooks can be sold through mass ebook sellers or independently from a website or blog.

Contact bloggers and magazine book reviewers to see if they are interested in reviewing your book or interviewing you. Offer free copies to those who agree to review the book. The boost from a fellow writer endorsing your product will both give attention and encourage potential buyers to purchase your book.
