This is made clear throughout the Harry Potter series. He was passionate about the subject and frustrated that he couldn't secure the position at Hogwarts for many years. He was eventually appointed the teacher in the sixth book, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", but he was only allowed to hold the position for one year due to the curse placed on the post by the previous teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart.
