What religion was King Philip 11 of Spain?

King Philip II of Spain was a Roman Catholic.

He was a devout Catholic and played a major role in the Counter-Reformation, a period of Catholic revival in response to the Protestant Reformation. He was known for his religious zeal and his persecution of Protestants, most notably in the Netherlands. He also funded the Spanish Armada, an ambitious fleet intended to invade England and overthrow Queen Elizabeth I, who was Protestant.
