What was found in hand when she died the book Speckled Band?

In "The Speckled Band" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the victim, Helen Stoner, was found with a small, yellow, speckled band clutched tightly in her hand when she died. This band was later identified as a venomous snake, a swamp adder, which had been sent into her room through a ventilation shaft.
