On June 12, 1951, Alberto Florentino was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He started playing the accordion when he was just eight years old. His musical aptitude showed early on, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing at public events and on the radio. In 1968, Alberto recorded his first album, “Los Primeros Pasos”, which was quickly followed by other hits, including “La Ciguapa”, “El Negrito Calculador”, “El Guardia del Arsenal”, and “La Mona”.
In 1970, Alberto Florentino became the first accordion player to perform at Carnegie Hall. His appearance was a resounding success, and it solidified his status as one of the most renowned accordionists of his time. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Alberto Florentino continued to perform around the world, playing in places like the United States, Europe, and Latin America. He also collaborated with other popular Dominican musicians, such as Juan Luis Guerra and Johnny Ventura.
Alberto Florentino's music combines elements of traditional Dominican folk music with Latin American rhythms and popular music. His virtuosic playing and energetic performances have made him one of the most beloved and influential accordionists in the Caribbean.
Alberto Florentino has been awarded several awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1998, he was awarded the National Order of Duarte, Sánchez, and Mella, one of the Dominican Republic's highest honors. In 2002, he was inducted into the Latin Music Hall of Fame.
Alberto Florentino passed away on October 19, 2023, in Santo Domingo at the age of 72. His legacy as a musical legend continues to inspire young musicians and captivate audiences around the world.
