- Varo was born in Anglès, Catalonia, Spain, in 1908. She studied art at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, where she was influenced by the surrealist movement.
- In 1936, Varo fled the Spanish Civil War to Paris, where she met and married the surrealist poet Benjamin Péret. She exhibited her work in Paris and other European cities, and became associated with the surrealist group.
- In 1942, Varo and Péret moved to Mexico, where she continued to paint and exhibit her work. She also became involved in the Mexican art scene and was part of the group known as "Los Fridos", which included artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
- Varo's paintings are characterized by their dreamlike quality and their exploration of themes such as the unconscious, the natural world, and the relationship between the sexes. She often depicted strange and fantastical creatures, as well as women who were often strong and independent.
- Varo's work has been praised for its originality and its technical skill. She is considered one of the most important surrealist painters of the 20th century.
