How long ago did stories begin to be documented in written format?

The first documented stories date back to around 3500 BC in ancient Mesopotamia, where the Sumerians developed a system of writing called cuneiform. Cuneiform was used to write on clay tablets, and the earliest known stories include the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Enuma Elish.
