Parable of the Sower Activities

A favorite story in the Christian tradition, Jesus' Parable of the Sower is found in the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke; it reminds the listener that a sower's seed will fail to take root until it falls upon good soil. Like all parables, the story teaches a lesson, and this lesson can often be better communicated to youngsters through activities and games.
  1. Ring Toss

    • Tape the string of a balloon to the floor and attach packets of seeds and a scripture quote to the string. Have children try to throw a hoop over the top of the floating balloon to win the seeds and the quote. The game will get children excited about winning a reward of knowledge.

    Fun Ecology

    • Set up bins containing rocks, soil, and seeds, respectively. Allow children to play with the materials in the bins while you talk about the miracle of growth and what plants need. Explain to them that life only flourishes under certain conditions. Supervise each child in planting a seed in the good soil. Relate the hands0on activity to the Biblical passage discussing the Parable of the Sower.

    Watch a Video Story

    • Some children may respond better to an animated video story. As with many other of the Bible's most famous parables, there are several video versions of the Parable of the Sower available for instruction and enjoyment. A Parable of the Sower video is included in the Animated Bible Series, which is available for free on YouTube.

    Display and Discussion

    • Create a display of various fruits with their corresponding seeds beside them. Ask children how something so large and nourishing can come from just a tiny seed. Encourage children to eat the fruit for added participation and enjoyment of the activity.
