How to Select Bias-Free Children's Books

Whether you are choosing a picture book or a book for an older child, it is important to read it first. It is the best way to check that the book is suitable for your child, particularly, if you feel strongly about your child reading a book which has a bias which you do not share, such as a book with a religious topic.

Instructions

  1. Picture Books

    • 1

      Visit your local book store.

    • 2

Browse the picture book section to find a book title which is of interest.

    • 3

Read the children's picture book inside the store; it may only take a few minutes, depending upon the age of the child. Check for a bias-free viewpoint in the storyline and the pictures.

    • 4

Purchase the bias-free picture book you think your child will enjoy reading with you.

    Children Over 7 Years Old

    • 5

Visit the children's section of your local library.

    • 6

Read the brief synopsis on the back sleeve of the book to give you a hint about the storyline content of the children's book.

    • 7

Research the book further if you are not satisfied with the brief sleeve synopsis. Read book reviews online as well as any articles related to the book release to check for any biased views which you don't want your child reading.

    • 8

Take the book out of the library. Read the book before giving it to your child to check the content thoroughly to ensure it is bias-free.

    • 9

Give the library book to your child to read; or buy the book new from your local bookstore if giving it as a gift.
