How to Create Short Fiction

The basic tenets and main elements of fiction writing hold true for both long and short forms of writing. You need characters, setting, point of view, theme and dramatic arc for novels and for short stories and flash fiction. In short fiction, however, you need to practice economy in words and of time scale. As with a novel, there must be a beginning, middle and an end. Note, however, that short fiction endings are not as detailed as the endings of novels, but signal a change to come. As acclaimed author Anne Enright has explained, "Something is known at the end of a story -- or nearly known -- that was not known before."

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a theme for your story. You can choose more than one, but note that in short fiction there isn't room for too many. The theme will be the core message in your story, but will remain implicit in the action of the tale rather than explicitly stated.

    • 2

Choose your main character and decide what he wants. This will be his goal.

    • 3

Determine the setting and point of view from which you will write. Consider how your choice of point of view ties in with the theme.

    • 4

Plot or outline your story either in detail or at a high level. Introduce conflict into the story via obstacles the character faces while trying to achieve her goal. Use it as a map in case you get stuck, but don't feel hemmed in by it. Make changes as you go along if you feel it improves the story.
