How to Type a Cover Sheet for a Story

Submitting your work for a class, a competition or to a literary magazine can be a time-consuming and anxiety-ridden process. It is essential to format your submission correctly and present your work with professionalism. In addition to a cover letter, the manuscript's cover sheet is the first thing readers and editors will see; therefore, you must make it as neat and comprehensive as possible.

Instructions

  1. Formatting the Cover Sheet

    • 1

Type your first and last name in the top left corner of the paper, flush with the left margin. Press "return" so that the cursor is on the next line.

    • 2

Type your full street address on this line, again flush with the left margin. Press "return" so that the cursor is on the next line.

    • 3

Type the city, state and ZIP code on this line, flush with the left margin. Advance the cursor to the next line.

    • 4

Type your full phone number on this line, flush with the left margin. If you have a cell phone number, add a comma and then "Cell" with that phone number. Advance the cursor to the next line.

    • 5

Type your e-mail address (if you have one) on this line, flush with the left margin.

    • 6

Move the cursor so that it is directly to the right of your last name, on the first line of the page. Advance the cursor over to the other side of the paper, staying on the same line. When the cursor is approximately 3 inches from the right edge of the page, type the word count for the story using numbers followed by the description "words." Example: 2,000 words.

    • 7

Page down with your cursor until it's in the middle of the page. Type the title of your manuscript or essay in the center of the page. Use initial capital letters for everything but small words. Example: Elephants as Pets. Print the cover sheet.
