Creative Writing Contests

When an author is looking to make a name for himself, one of the best ways is to enter writing contests. You can get noticed and, if you start winning, you can also end up published. But there are things to keep in mind when it comes to entering.
  1. Know Your Skills

    • There are hundreds of writing contests for all kinds of genres. Know which genre you write best. Then search for that specific type of writing competition

    Fee or No Fee

    • Most writing competitions require an entry fee. Be sure you are aware of this and have the necessary funds. There are free contests, but they are few and far between.

    Follow the Rules

    • Make sure you know what the rules are for the competition. Is your story the right length? Does it violate any rules for content? If you don't read the rules, you could be disqualified quickly.

    Be Patient

    • Writing contests take months as the writers write their stories and enter them. Sometimes the contest starts allowing submissions at the beginning of the summer but will not choose a winner until fall. Be patient.

    Keep Trying

    • If you have the necessary funds to keep trying and entering other contests, then do so. More than likely you have several stories, maybe even in multiple genres, that you can enter.
