Pick a story that can be written quickly. This should include a simple narrative and plot that can be wrapped up quickly. Take book length into consideration as well. A story that can be wrapped up in less than 200 or 150 pages will be a lot easier to write within a month than one that is more than 300 pages.
Write a synopsis or outline of the novel. This will lessen or prevent the possibility of writer’s block. Do a quick character sketch of the main character, including who the character is, what he wants or desires, and how he will pursue his desires.
Schedule a writing plan. Determine how many pages will be written within a day or a week. Try to write a chapter a day. Use a calendar to keep abreast of the schedule and the novel’s progress.
Set aside time to write the novel each day. Determine the number of hours needed to devote to the novel. This can involve a few hours before work or a few hours after the family has gone to bed. Write during lunch breaks at work. Jot down a few pages in a notebook or journal or write on a laptop.
Avoid distractions. This means turning off the TV set and shun surfing on the web or checking email. Let family and friends know that this time will be devoted to writing only.
Be consistent. Don’t procrastinate. Once a schedule is chosen, stick to it. Write as much as possible each time and keep track of the novel’s progress using the calendar. Set a goal for a number of pages that must be written each day to complete the novel.
Avoid editing while writing. Don’t second guess writing choices or listen to your internal editor. Keep writing. There will be plenty of time after the novel is written to edit during the revision phase.
