Why does Giles Corey say his wife has been reading strange books?

In the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Giles Corey is a farmer and a respected member of the Salem community. He appears in the play only briefly and doesn't say anything about his wife reading strange books. However, his wife, Martha Corey, is accused of witchcraft and is hanged during the Salem witch trials.
