How to Take a Mental Picture When Speed Reading

Speed reading is a method of reading text and absorbing the information quickly. Adults use it to cover large amounts of information in short periods of time and young students learn it to help them read. This technique utilizes the creation of mental images for each word, which increases the chances of retaining information that is read. It also speeds up reading, as images form more readily in the mind than words and definitions. Creating a mental image is done by simplifying each sentence and focusing only on the important, descriptive words.

Instructions

    • 1

Open up the section of text you will be reading.

    • 2

      Read through the first sentence.

    • 3

Pay attention only to the words for which you can create mental images. Ignore the transitional words and focus on the nouns, adjectives and verbs.

    • 4

Create a mental picture of the meaning of each word as you read it. For instance, "The cat in the hat" should yield a mental image of a cat inside a hat. When dealing with complex ideas, try to visualize their meaning in image form. For example, you may visualize "love" as a heart or a couple embracing each other.

Combine these images in your mind to create a minimovie. This movie will visually convey the concepts the sentence and later paragraphs describe. For instance, imagine the sentence, "The praise that comes from love does not make us vain, but humble." You may visualize a couple, one of whom is offering many compliments to the other, the other of whom is turned slightly and acting shy, yet still making eye contact.

Apply this method to the rest of the sentences in the text you are reading.
