The Best Animation Flip Books

A flip book is a book with a series of illustrations that vary gradually from page to page, so that as the pages are turned fast, the pictures appear to animate. They are often illustrated books for children, but sometimes animation flip books address adults as well, using photographs rather than drawings. Animations flip books are a primitive form of animation and they rely on the illusion of motion that the continuous succession of images creates. Fun and cheap, these books can be a perfect way to pass the time.
  1. "Donald & Pluto"

    • Although Walt Disney published some flip books himself when he was alive, he most often allowed other publishers to use his characters for their books and thus advertising his movies. In 1939, Collins published one of the most well-known flip books devoted to Disney characters, Donald and Pluto. It is a large volume consisting of five flip books, with more than 2,000 pictures, printed on both sides. Following the book's success, the famous French publication house, Hachette, published it in French. Later, another version of "Donald & Pluto" was made, consisting of 10 books.

"Hollywood Cartoons -- America in Its Golden Age"

    • Written by Michael Barrier and published by the Oxford University Press, "Hollywood Cartoons" concentrates on the history of American cartoon studios between 1930 and 1960, the period called the "Golden Age" of cartooning. In the corner of the book, there are three little flip books that provide the reader with illustrations of the different types of animation. The book has been praised by the "New York Times," the "Economist," "Publishers Weekly" and "Boston Book Review." Terry Teachout from the "New York Times" wrote oof the book: "Those who take the art of animation seriously will find this tough-minded book challenging and revelatory."

    "Spirou & Fantasio"

    • In 1995, Démons & Merveilles published four flip books of "Spirou & Fantasio" made by André Franquin. His graphic approach that gradually evolved toward a multicolor style of animation, chiaroscuro and a dynamic sense of movement, made these flip books something entirely new and different from what the world had seen before. Joseph Gillain, "Jijé," also contributed to the book's success with his artistic involvement on the "Spirou & Fantasio" strip, coming up with the character Fantasio.

    "Action Movie"

    • A little, vintage, flip book by the Walt Disney Company with two sides and two stories, but no words, "Action Movie" is a Donald Duck and Tarzan flip book that is stapled in the center and has eight-page flip movies on either end. Featuring a bright-colored cover, this flip book was made in Japan, but there is no information on who exactly the manufacturer was. Published for the first time in the 1950s, "Action Movie" is considered a classic.
