How to Cite Web Sources Without an Author

Properly citing the information in your research helps add credibility to your claims. With the rising popularity of online publications, it may sometimes be necessary for you to cite a web source in a publication. While some web sources may not have a listed author, these sources can still be cited under the Modern Language Association formatting rules.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the title or name of the website in its entirety in italics, using proper title capitalization. If the name or title is not made evident on the page itself, use the information provided at the top of your browser.

    • 2

Enter the version number of the website, if available, in regular type.

    • 3

Type the name of the institution or organization that produced or is affiliated with the content in regular type, followed by a comma and the date of publication.

    • 4

End the citation by noting the medium of the information, in this case "Web," and the date on which you accessed the information.
