An audiologist can work with anyone from birth to the elderly. There are no limitations. With the elderly, audiologists are often the ones to give out hearing aids and fit them to a specific person. In younger children, audiologists may diagnose hearing problems or issues with balance that a child was born with.
Audiologists work in a lot of different areas. An audiologist can work at a hospital, private practice office, university, rehabilitation center, nursing home, clinic or other organization that focuses on good health. Depending on the place of work, an audiologist will perform different functions.
Research is an important job for audiologists who are interested in it. These audiologists don't work with patients but find new ways to help those with hearing loss. Researching audiologists spend most of their days doing studies and writing reports, reporting on new techniques and testing them to see which work best.
Audiologists can work with schoolchildren to test hearing in students who might have hearing loss, or test an entire school for preventative measures. They'll also help the child's parents decide which treatment is best and can work with the school to provide the services these children need. Audiologists will often screen infants for hearing loss, too, and provide treatment if needed.
Audiologists diagnose and treat hearing loss for people of all ages. Anyone who thinks he might have hearing loss goes to an audiologist, who uses special equipment to test and also check out eardrums with special tools. If the hearing loss is caused by a medical disorder, audiologists can often diagnose these and provide referrals to other specialists.
Hearing aids are another big area that audiologists work in. Most people who wear hearing aids in the United States got them from an audiologist. Mostly working with the elderly but some young people as well, the audiologist fits the patient for her hearing aids, helps her choose the right one and helps the patient learn how to use it. Audiologists working in nursing homes will deal a lot with hearing aids.
Believe it or not, audiologists also perform counseling for people with hearing loss. Some people may become upset about losing their hearing, and audiologists can help and give advice to these people on how to deal with social situations, school or work given their hearing problems.
