Benefits of Books on Tape

Voracious readers know that it's always good to have a book--preferably a pile of books on various subjects. There are times when even the most dedicated reader can't sit down and read, and that's where books on tape come in. Sometimes they're in the form of a CD, or an MP3, but the generic term "book on tape" covers all forms. Recorded books are useful in a number of ways.
  1. Books for the Visually Impaired

    • The classic view of books on tape is books for the blind, but that is not the only view on this subject. Those who have cataracts or other visual impairments that make it difficult to see small print, very farsighted people and people suffering from eye injuries are just some of those who would benefit from an audio book.

    Children's Entertainment

    • On long trips or short hops to the grocery store, a book on tape can be the difference between a quiet back seat and chaos. Pick some children's favorite tales or find a good chapter book that will fascinate your kids, and the noise factor in your car could lower considerably.

    People with Low Literacy

    • People with low literacy levels or who are illiterate can benefit greatly by listening to books on tape. The value of the written word is certainly not lost on those who haven't learned it yet or for those whose reading level is not quite up to the book that they are listening to. In any case, a familiarity with the vocabulary may help in comprehension.

    Exercise Motivation

    • Listening to music on headphones is a classic diversion while working out, but listening to an audiobook may help you to work out longer without realizing it. Most songs are three to five minutes long, while most books on tape are 45 minutes to a side. Music provides many natural points at which you can logically take a break, but with an audiobook you may want to keep working out until the end of your chapter.

    Multitasking with Crafts

    • Working on crafts is a relaxing hobby, but combining it with the hobby of reading can make it even more enjoyable. Instead of watching a movie while knitting or listening to a CD while quilting, listen to a book on tape and you'll get the entertainment value of both of your hobbies at once.
