How to Write a Phase Autobiography

A phase autobiography is a personal story that recounts different times during your life. Think of it as a snapshot of you. A photo captures one moment in time, so structure your phase autobiography so it captures your life in a similar way. The phase can range anywhere from a single one-day event to a period of several months or years, but ultimately it should tell a story.

Instructions

  1. Brainstorm

    • 1

Think critically about your life and what has made you into the person you are today. Everyone has a memory full of stories to tell, the key is to finding yours. For instance, maybe you met someone on the first day of school who became your lifelong best friend. Or, maybe you lived abroad for a year and it helped you figure out what career path you wanted to pursue.

    • 2

Write down all of your ideas. Don't limit yourself during this brainstorming session -- just write down everything that comes to mind.

    • 3

Review your brainstormed ideas. Circle ideas that you think are interesting and cross out those you don't like.

    • 4

Expand on your chosen idea. Once you've determined a topic, write down everything you can remember about the phase, including dates, locations, names of people involved and what happened during the phase. Write down everything that you can remember, including any life lessons you learned as a result.

    Outline

    • 5

Organize the story. A phase autobiography should follow a chronological order because it details a period of time in your life. Decide where the story should start and end.

    • 6

Write the introduction. The introduction sets the scene for the reader and creates the basis for the rest of the story.

    • 7

Create the body of the story. The body breaks down the story and ensures that you include all aspects of the story.

    • 8

Determine how you want to conclude the story. Unlike other essays, you don't have to summarize your story into a conclusion. In a phase biography, you might decide to end the story with the last event that happened during the phase.

    Write

    • 9

Tell your story. Take the outline you created and use it to write out your phase autobiography from beginning to end. Don't worry about grammar or spelling errors at this time -- simply write until you feel you've told the whole story.

    • 10

Take a break. Leave your phase autobiography for a while -- at least a day.

    • 11

Review your initial draft. Coming back to your phase autobiography after a break allows you to look at it with a fresh perspective. You might notice missing parts that need to be added to the story.

    • 12

Repeat the writing process until you feel satisfied with your phase autobiography.

    Edit

    • 13

Review your draft for spelling, grammatical and syntax errors. Correct any glaring mistakes.

    • 14

Evaluate your narrative. Determine if your story makes sense and is easily understandable. Make appropriate changes.

    • 15

Consult an outside editor. Sometimes it's difficult to edit your own work, so ask a trusted friend, colleague or professional editor to read your work and offer constructive criticism. Editors often offer valuable feedback that you wouldn't have thought of without their help.

    • 16

Repeat the editing process until you feel comfortable with the piece. However, remember that good writers are never truly satisfied with their work -- ultimately you have to decide when your piece is worthy enough to publish.

    • 17

Publish your phase autobiography. Publishing can mean anything from submitting it to your professor as an assignment to posting it on your blog to submitting it for pay to a publication.
