How to Set Gauge Pins on a Letterpress

Letterpress printing is a beautiful, but dying art. If you're lucky enough to have a letterpress, you may know that manually positioning paper against the platen can be time consuming and difficult. Gauge pins remedy this problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Mount the draw paper as you normally would. This is the paper that your printing paper would normally sit on top of.

    • 2

Mark where you would like the printed materials to sit. Cut a horizontal slit parallel to that line about a line below it. Insert the top of the gauge pin razor. Use a razor blade to slide behind the half-mounted gauge pin and cut another parallel slit. Insert the bottom gauge pin razor.

    • 3

Mount the rest of your gauge pins. You may repeat this process on the sides. You'll have to cut vertical slits instead of horizontal ones.
