Download the "Smashwords Style Guide" from the Resources section and read it thoroughly. Adjust the font, font size, spacing, and formatting of your manuscript as described by the style guide. Insert the required "Smashwords edition" information on your copyright page and save the file with a ".doc" or ".docx" extension.
Navigate to www.smashwords.com and click the "Sign Up" link in the top-right corner of the page to create an account. Click the "Dashboard" button and then the "Publish a Book." text link.
Enter the requested information including the title of your book, a short summary and the genre. Choose "Make My Book Free" under the "Price" subsection of "Pricing and Sampling." Scroll to the "eBook Formats" section and place a check mark next to every distribution option.
Click "Choose File" under "Select File of Book to Publish" and browse for your saved manuscript file. Hit "Open" to upload the file. Read the "Publishing Agreement" section and click the "Publish" button to upload your free ebook to the Smashwords catalog.
