How to Program e-books

Much of the recent popularity behind e-books and e-readers stems from their ability to allow amateur and professional authors alike to write, publish and distribute their own books digitally at a fraction of the cost of traditional print publishing. Though there are many e-readers currently available on the market, Adobe Acrobat's PDF file is the only file type that is compatible across all of the e-reader platforms. Authors who want to program their e-books to ensure compatibility across all of the major e-reader platforms should make their book available as a PDF file.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a book on your computer using word processing software that allows you to save the file with a PDF extension. Make sure to proofread your work for spelling and grammar errors. If possible, have someone whose writing you respect critique your book.

    • 2

Save your book as a PDF file. This allows you to maintain margins and specialized fonts and characters so your output file looks exactly as you want it to on an e-reader screen.

    • 3

Add metadata to the file. This will embed your name, the book's title, its publisher information as well as tags or keywords that will help readers find your book when they search with the same terms. This is what the e-reader device will use to categorize your book in its library.

    • 4

Insert an SD card into your computer's SD card slot and copy your PDF file to it.

    • 5

Eject the SD card from your computer and insert it into your e-reader device. The e-reader will automatically add your book to its collection.
