Use decorative scrapbook paper, wrapping paper or cut up photographs of loved ones to decoupage the front and back cover of your storybook. Paste the decorative paper as a background and glue various pictures on top, or use torn pieces from several patterns to create an eclectic book cover. Keep your cover protected by brushing another layer or two of decoupage glue over your whole creation or spray it with a clear varnish to seal. Make sure you work in a well-ventilated area to avoid chemical inhalation.
A simple poem talking about your new bundle of joy, handwritten on the front of your storybook will also make a decorative and heart-felt cover. Write your poem on simple notebook paper. Take your time to come up with the right phrases to convey your emotions and feelings about your baby. Write your poem in calligraphy or type and print it in a fancy font. Use colored pencils to draw a border around the edges of the book and poem. Keep the cover looking nice by taking it to a print shop and having it laminated.
Scavenge through your local fabric or thrift store for a cute piece of fabric that matches the theme of the book for a rustic-looking cover. Cut multiple pieces of fabric in varying patterns into geometric shapes. Fit the pieces together like a puzzle, fastening them with decorative stitches using embroidery floss. Fabric glue will help attach little accessories such as beads, buttons, rhinestones or feathers. Glue those extra pieces on tight to avoid a choking hazard for little ones.
A graphite sketch outlining the profile of your baby or a detailed drawing depicting your family with your new member also makes something special out of the cover of your baby book. Use a photograph, high-quality drawing paper and an HB pencil to create a sketch. Draw lightly, using a kneaded eraser to remove mistakes. Keep the graphite from smudging by spraying it with a matte fixative. Your storybook will be something your baby and family will treasure forever with a simple sketch of loved ones glued on the front.
